Get Local BC Recently we have seen a movement to "Get Local" in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. The movement believes that locally grown food is better for your health, it is better for the environment and it is better for the local economy as it supports local farmers and producers. Get local means choosing to buy and eat in season foods grown, processed and manufactured within your local region and as close as possible to your home. There is no doubt that eating local food is better than imported food because local food is fresher as it travels less to reach the consumers. That means local food is tastier and in some cases more nutritious. Imported food travels thousand of kilometres to get to our supermarkets and this contributes enormously to greenhouse gases. Imported food also has a higher chance of contamination as we cannot control the hygiene and health standard of the exporting countries. On the other hand we are better informed of our local growers, farmers and food processors production systems. Choosing local food also helps our local economy and create and maintain jobs which otherwise would have gone overseas. In British Columbia, Canada a group of businesses have joined forces to support, educate and promote Get Local. These businesses include local growers, farmers, food processors, restaurant establishments that use and serve locally grown food, and food retailers that support and carry locally grown food. Here is a list of businesses in British Columbia that are part of the Get Local campaign:
